The mechanism of particle growth of the blue emitting BaMgAl10O17:Eu2 phosphor by firing with AlF3 has been clarified. It was found that th
e reaction between BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ and AlF3 during firing, on the bas
is of the following chemical equation, results in recreation of BaMgAl
10O17:E2+ with particle growth BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ + (4/3)AlF3 reversible
arrow BaMgF4:Eu3+ + (17/3)Al2O3 the firing of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ with A
lF3 first converts the phosphor into a mixture of the two compounds, B
aMgF4:Eu2+ and Al2O3, at around 1200 degrees C. The BaMgF4:Eu2+ melts
at temperatures over 1000 degrees C, then reacts with Al2O3, and parti
cipates In the recreation of both BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ and AlF3 through a
chemical reaction between the two compounds at 1200 degrees C in BaMgF
4:Eu2+ solutions. Recreated AlF3 appears to sublime immediately becaus
e it is a material which sublimates with heating. This paper proposes
a mechanism for the growth of particle of recreated BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ b
y the melting of BaMgF4:Eu2+.
