Abstract
The early history of the practical development of wireless communicati on is reviewed. While the enterprise was truly an international one, i t is clear that the special, courageous activities which characterized Marconi's work proved to be essential for the rapid development which occurred in the decade between 1895 and 1905. He in turn was aided by many sources, not least by highly competent and imaginative engineers of the Italian Navy.
