The magnetic properties of unoccupied electronic states in nonmagnetic
metal films deposited on a clean ferromagnetic surface are studied by
Inverse Photoemission excited by low-energy spin-polarised electrons.
V and Pt ultrathin films grown on Fe(001) are considered as examples.
Along T vith the Fe substrate majority- and minority-spin peaks, inte
rface and overlayer-derived features are clearly identified in Pt/Fe(0
01). The spin polarisation dependence of the relative transitions indi
cates a ferromagnetic coupling between Pt and Fe. In V/Fe(001) no over
layer-induced transitions are detected. A strong attenuation of both m
ajority- and minority-spin electrons passing through the V film is obs
erved. This result is discussed in terms of the electron mean free pat
h and its spin dependence in magnetic films.
