Surface phonons of InP(110) have been studied under high spectral reso
lution by Raman scattering. Due to the excellent energy resolution of
Raman scattering in this work (maximum 1 cm(-1) = 0.12 meV) it was pos
sible to resolve and identify for the first time a surface phonon mode
at 350 cm(-1) which appears close in energy to the bulk longitudinal
optical phonon at 345 cm(-1). A surface phonon has been predicted theo
retically near this frequency and was assigned to a Fuchs-Kliewer phon
on; This assignment is, however, not in agreement to our experimental
results, which show that this surface phonon is a microscopic surface
phonon mode.
