One century after their discovery and first application to radiology,
X-rays are finally achieving coherence. The potential impact on radiol
ogical imaging is extremely important, with significant social repercu
ssions. These exciting developments are the final product of a revolut
ion initiated in the late 1960's by Gianfranco Chiarotti and a few oth
er pioneers, who first dreamed of using electron accelerators as super
ior X-rays sources, and then transformed this dream into reality.
