R. Bechtler et al., INFLUENCE OF ELEMENTAL SULFUR ON THE DE-NOVO-SYNTHESIS OF ORGANOCHLORINE COMPOUNDS FROM RESIDUAL CARBON ON FLY-ASH, Chemosphere (Oxford), 37(9-12), 1998, pp. 2261-2278
Thermal experiments between 300 degrees C and 500 degrees C were perfo
rmed with fly ash of a municipal waste incineration plant which had be
en spiked with elemental sulfur. The influence of elemental sulfur on
the heterogeneous carbon-decomposition and the de-novo-synthesis of po
lychlorinated compounds was investigated. Compounds such as polychlori
nated dibenzodioxins, dibenzofurans, benzenes, benzo- and dibenzothiop
henes, Cl-4-thiophene, Cl-4-thienothiophene, Cl-7- and Cl-8-phenylthio
phene were quantified. Apart from those, other intermediate structures
were determined. These compounds are mainly aromatics with a vinyl- o
r butadienyl-group, stabilized by perchlorination. In detail, the comp
ounds are Cl-7- and Cl-8-styrene, Cl-10-vinylnaphthalenes, Cl-10-pheny
lbutadiene, Cl-10-octatetraene, Cl-10-bisbutadienylsulfides and Cl-12-
stilbenes. (C)1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
