We report experimental observation of backward sum-frequency generatio
n in periodically-poled LiNbO3 resulting from mixing between the forwa
rd propagating fundamental beam with the second harmonic beam. Althoug
h the forward second harmonic beam itself is not phase-matched, the su
m-frequency generation exhibits several phase-matching peaks. (C) 1998
