Tissue expansion is widely used in the treatment of soft tissue defect
s; however, few cases have been reported using this method for the tre
atment of hypertrophic scars. Our present study demonstrates a new met
hod for the treatment of hypertrophic scars by tissue expansion, which
takes advantage of the dynamic force of expansion and local tissue is
chemia using intracutaneous acute pressure. We report on six patients,
with hypertrophic scars on the forearm, lower leg, shoulder, and butt
ock, all with severe itching or pain. Interesting results can be seen
in the histological findings. In each case, the structure of the colla
gen fibers in the hypertrophic scars was clearly destroyed. Clinically
, favorable results were obtained, with the resolution of symptoms and
no recurrence of the hypertrophic scars in long term follow-up.
