Abstract
We have developed a reduced model of the evolution of the polarization states of the channels in a wavelength-division-multiplexed system th at follows only the Stokes parameters for each channel. We apply this model to demonstrating that the expected repolarization of polarizatio n-scrambled signals is small. We verify our results by comparing them with numerical simulations with realistic parameters. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.
