Wa. Harrison, AN EXPLORATORY INVESTIGATION OF THE CRASH INVOLVEMENT OF DISQUALIFIEDDRIVERS AND MOTORCYCLISTS, Journal of safety research, 28(2), 1997, pp. 105-111
The crash involvement of drivers and motorcyclists who were disqualifi
ed from driving was investigated using the Victorian database of repor
ted injury crashes. Disqualified drivers and motorcyclists were overre
presented in more serious crashes and in crashes that occurred during
recreational times, such as night time and weekends. They were also ov
er-represented in single-vehicle crashes and crashes involving a colli
sion with a stationary object. The possibility that this pattern repre
sents an ongoing road safety risk, and the impact of this road-user be
havior on the effectiveness of License cancellation and suspension pen
alties for serious traffic offenses are discussed. (C) 1997 National S
