Abstract
Occasional coincidences between resonance-line wavelengths of many ele ments and generation bands of robust excimer lasers provide the opport unity to create a new kind of near-surface dense-plasma source. A brie f review of the work on plasma production by intense resonant laser ra diation is given. The consequences of the development of anode plasma sources for light- and heavy-ion accelerators are briefly discussed. ( C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
