Je. Clark et Elc. Ong, A UK CENTERS EXPERIENCE OF MYCOBACTERIAL INFECTIONS IN HIV-INFECTED PATIENTS, International journal of STD & AIDS, 9(10), 1998, pp. 613-615
A descriptive retrospective review of 26 patients with mycobacterial i
nfection; 7 Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), 17 Mycobacterium avium c
omplex (MAC), one M. xenopei and one M. kansasii. Diagnosis of non-tub
erculous mycobacteria (NTM) was made mainly from blood in 68%, with bi
opsy material initially useful in 68%. All MTB were fully sensitive. N
o patients received MAC chemoprophylaxis, yet resistance to rifabutin,
ciprofloxacin and ethambutol was noted. It is important to examine th
e UK experience of mycobacterial infection; individual centres may fin
d it useful to review infecting organisms and resistance patterns.
