Abstract
Following a short review of some studies from Germany and Switzerland on coercive measures in psychiatry a retrospective investigation of re straints in the two psychiatric departments of the Medical School of H annover is presented. Frequency, time, diagnoses, reasons and procedur es are reported in detail and discussed in comparison with results of other studies.
