Abstract
This paper briefly describes the Library-Bibliographic Classification (BBK) adopted in the countries of the Former Soviet Union. It shows th at it is expedient to use subsection ''Optics'' of the BBK to organize informational-search systems and hierarchical databases. It proposes an updated version of the classification scheme for optics that will p lay the role of an information-search language when creating an electr onic catalog and databases. [The complete plan of the ''Optics'' secti on of the BBK is deposited in the Library of the Academy of Sciences o f Russia.] (C) 1998 The Optical Society of America. [S1070-9762(98)027 10-9].
