Va. Usoltsev, ESTIMATING THE UPPER LIMITS OF CARBON POOL IN PHYTOMASS OF SPRUCE ANDFIR FORESTS OF NORTHERN EURASIA, Russian journal of ecology, 29(5), 1998, pp. 322-330
The spruce and fir phytomass data bank was compiled on the basis of 10
0 publications describing data obtained on 400 plots established on an
area from West Europe to Japan. These data were used to calculate con
version factors (the ratio of carbon pool in trunk, roots, branches, a
nd foliage in metric tons per ha to standing crop in m(3) per ha). Mul
tifactor models for estimating conversion factors in four subzones of
boreal forests were calculated. The stand self-thinning concept and th
e methodology based on a system of related equations were used to deve
lop a method for calculating the density trajectories of the upper lim
its of the carbon pool in forest phytomass. The utmost carbon pool ind
ices for four subzones were compared with corresponding indices calcul
ated according to the traditional tables of regional yield for closed
stands.
