A new approach for simultaneous optimization of intelligent structures
and the control system is presented. Conventional structural sizing v
ariables and elements of the feedback gain matrix are both treated as
independent design variables in design. The mass and the vibration con
trol performance index of intelligent structures are chosen as objecti
ve functions, and constraints on real parts of eigenvalue, imaginary p
arts of eigenvalue of closed-loop system and actuator control forces a
re included. Simultaneous optimization of the intelligent structure an
d the control system is converted into multiobjective optimization. A
numerical example is presented to prove the Validity of the present ap
