Rdm. Nash et al., DESCRIPTIONS OF THE GULF VII PRO-NET AND MAFF/GUILDLINE UNENCASED HIGH-SPEED PLANKTON SAMPLERS/, Journal of plankton research, 20(10), 1998, pp. 1915-1926
Two high-speed plankton samplers (Gulf VII/PRO-NET and MAFF/Guildline)
currently in use to sample pelagic eggs and larvae in waters around t
he UK are described. Both samplers are modifications of Gulf III type
samplers and are capable of being towed at speeds of up to 7 knots (3.
6 m s(-1)). The performance of the samplers (flow rates, degree of clo
gging of the nets and sample depth profiles) can be monitored during d
eployment. The real-time monitoring packages also provide vertical pro
files of temperature, salinity and chlorophyll a fluorescence. Both sa
mplers can be constructed in different sizes to suit the vessel from w
hich the sampler is deployed and the expected concentration of plankto
n in the sampling area.
