The title compound, obtained by treating [Me2Sn{(MeSO2)(2)N}(mu-OH)](2
) with one equivalent of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphinyl)ethane (dppoe) in
acetonitrile, is the first uncharged chain polymeric complex derived f
rom a dimeric diorganyltin(IV) hydroxide. Its crystal structure, as de
termined by X-ray diffraction at -100 degrees C (monoclinic, space gro
up P2(1)/c, Z = 2 Sn-2 formula units), consists of infinite chains run
ning parallel to the x axis. The tin atoms within the Sn, units are re
lated by inversion symmetry and display a pentagonal-bipyramidal seven
-coordination with axial methyl groups [C-Sn-C 155.2(2)degrees] and an
approximately planar equatorial pentagon resulting from two bridging
OH groups, one asymmetrically N,O-bidentate (MeSO2)(2)N- anion and one
P=O function of the bridging dppoe ligand [Sn-O(H) 208.0(3) and 212.1
(3), Sn-O(P) 231.3(2), Sn-N 278.1(3), Sn-O(S) 290.1(3) pm]. A second o
xygen atom of the anion is connected to the centrosymmetric [SnO(H)](2
) four -membered ring via an intramolecular hydrogen bond [O ... O 275
.9(4) pm, O-H ... O 164(4)degrees].
