Soda-lime-silicate glasses containing manganese, manganese and antimon
y, and manganese and iron were exposed to an ultraviolet light source.
The manganese-doped glasses with antimony solarized because the easil
y reduced Sb5+ ion underwent an ultraviolet-induced reaction with Mn2 to produce Mn3+, resulting in a darkening of the glass. A similar rea
ction was not observed for iron and manganese in the glass. (C) 1998 E
