Abstract
The densities of alkali silicate glasses are reported. The composition was varied over an exceptionally wide range of values from J = 0.0-2. 2 (0-69 mol.% alkali oxide), where J is the molar ratio of alkali oxid e to silica. These new results, along with previously reported literat ure data are used in a unified density model based on the short range order determined from nuclear magnetic resonance and Raman spectroscop ies. Volumes and packing fractions of the structural units were obtain ed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
