Abstract
It is proposed that the main source of stellar wind and optical variab ility in the binary system Z CMa is the optical primary, rasher than i ts so-called infrared companion. The higher polarization of the spectr al lines compared to the continuum is interpreted as the result of Tho mson scattering of the line radiation in the region where it forms, i. e., in the stellar wind.
