Abstract
Catalytic carbonylation of benzylic eaters, ethers or alcohols in the presence of [Pd(PPh3)(2)Cl-2] and HBF4. OEt2 as co-catalyst affords 3- phenylpropionic acid or eaters with good yields and selectivities. It is shown that the reaction proceeds smoothly in methanol through the i ntermediary of the corresponding l-phenylethyl methyl ether. (C) Acade mie des sciences/Elsevier, Paris.
