Abstract
The above bicyclic lactone can be synthesized by phase transfer cataly sis or in DMSO under ultrasonic activation. Alkylation with epihalohyd rines of anionic species generated from phenylacetonitrile or alkyl ph enylacetate is followed by possible hydrolysis and further cyclization in acidic medium.
