Photochemical electron transfer (PET) reactions were carried out using
PET sensitizer (TPT) and dichalcogenides (DPDT/DPDS). Sensitizer fluo
rescence quenching by dichalcogenides is found to be very efficient an
d it leads to the electron-transfer process. A phenylchalcogenide cati
on produced via dichalcogenide radical cation, was successfully utiliz
ed in cyclization reactions using variety of substrates. Thermal cycli
zation reaction supports the PET mechanism and also indicates the pote
ntiality of the method in organic synthesis. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science
