H. Schmidt et M. Soltanifarshi, EFFECT OF NITROGEN IMPLANTATION ON THE HYDROGEN DEPTH DISTRIBUTION AND FATIGUE PROPERTIES OF TI6AL4V (VOL 248, PG 73, 1998), Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 255(1-2), 1998, pp. 172-176
Depth distributions and fatigue of nitrogen-implanted Ti6Al4V alloy we
re investigated using backscattering spectrometry, nuclear reaction an
alysis and rotating bending tests. A hydrogen accumulation (up to 2.6
at.%) occurs in the region enriched in nitrogen. High hydrogen concent
rations occur when a mixture of titanium nitride (TiN) and alpha-titan
ium is formed; the concentration decreases below 1.5 at.% when a conti
nuous TIN layer is formed. Nitrogen implantation does not reduce fatig
ue life. Fatigue cracks preferentially form in regions where the enric
hment of nitrogen and hydrogen is close to the surface. (C) 1998 Elsev
