In (I), C14H14O2, the dihydrobenzene ring adopts a flattened boat conf ormation and the hydroxyl group is involved in an O-H ... O intramolec ular hydrogen bond. In (II), C21H16O2, the dihydronaphthalene ring sys tem is planar and makes a dihedral angle of 70.06(7)degrees with the n aphthalene ring system; the hydroxyl group forms O-H ... O intermolecu lar hydrogen bonds.
