The reaction of bis(eta(3)-allyl)nickel with 1,4-dichlorobutene-2 yiel
ds isomeric nonadienes and nonatrienes, which are the products of ally
l fragment trimerization. This direction of the reaction is unusual fo
r transition metal bis(eta(3)-allyl) complexes. The conditions are fou
nd under which the products of unusual allyl coupling dominate. The re
action is accompanied by the redox disproportionation of allyl ligands
where an important step is hydride transfer.
