The catalytic and structural properties of the ultradispersed powder (
UDP) of silver and a number of Ag-containing catalysts prepared by con
ventional techniques were studied. The extremely high selectivity to e
thylene oxide observed in the transformation of ethylene over the UDP
of silver and Ag/C is probably related to the formation of specific ox
ide-like structures that serve as a source of electrophilic oxygen nee
ded for the reaction.
