Ej. Rankow et I. Tessaro, MAMMOGRAPHY AND RISK-FACTORS FOR BREAST-CANCER IN LESBIAN AND BISEXUAL WOMEN, American journal of health behavior, 22(6), 1998, pp. 403-410
Objective: To determine risk factors for breast cancer and screen- ing
adherence in a sample of lesbian and bisexual women. Methods: Anonymo
us questionnaires were distributed using outreach methods to reach a b
road group of respondents. Results: Respondents reported higher rates
of nulliparity and alcohol use and lower rates of breast self-examinat
ion compared to generalsamples of women. Family history of breast canc
er, age at menarche, and obesity were comparable with general samples,
Mammography was associated with older age, being;white, having insura
nce and higher incomes Conclusion: Principal barriers to screening wer
e inability to afford services, feeling not at risk, and lack of insur
ance.
