Kinetics of electrode processes are investigated on smooth platinum du
ring the electrolysis of dilute chloride solutions. It is shown that o
xygen and hypochlorite are adsorbed chemically on platinum in commensu
rate quantities, which grow linearly with the increasing potential. Hy
pochlorite itself oxidizes platinum surface, generating chemisorbed ox
ygen rather than an oxide phase.
