Va. Rudnitskii et Sp. Melnikov, DYNAMIC METHODS OF EVALUATING THE MECHANICAL-PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS USING THE VILLARI EFFECT, Russian journal of nondestructive testing, 34(2), 1998, pp. 96-102
The new method discussed here for recording the collision of a rigid r
od made of a highly magnetostrictive material is based on measuring th
e variations of its magnetization. Analytical relations given establis
h a link between the emf in an induction coil firmly attached to the r
od and the mechanical stresses in the rod. Equations that define hardn
ess as the average contact pressure are obtained on the basis of the s
olution of the problem of the collision of a rod having a hemispherica
l end with an elastoplastic half-space. The results of experimental in
vestigations are reported.
