Two categories of polycationic ''strings'' have been synthesized and i
nvestigated for their effect on the aqueous solubility of hydrophobic
organic compounds (benzene and 4-bromotoluene, the latter discussed he
re). Polycationic ''strings'' are compounds in which cationic sites (q
uaternary ammonium sites) are incorporated into the covalent structure
along a linear chain with free-floating associated anions. The catego
ries are: I) defined length chains consisting of quaternized dabco uni
ts connected by intervening lengths of methylene groups, terminating w
ith omega-alkanol units, and 2) alpha,omega-dimethylaminoalkane units
quaternized with chain extending omega-alkanol units. The observed ant
ihydrophobic effect depends on the total charge, the length of the cha
rge-intervening linkages, and the terminating groups. (C) 1998 Elsevie
