This work is an attempt at an overview of recent advances in the physi
ology, biochemistry, and lignin-degrading mechanisms of white-rot fung
i with special emphasis on their ligninolytic activity under natural a
nd laboratory conditions. The geographical distribution of these fungi
and their role in natural ecosystems are discussed. The compositions
of the ligninolytic enzyme complexes of the most efficient lignin-degr
ading fungi are considered.
