The large helical device (LHD) is the largest superconducting heliotro
n-type device under construction at the National Institute for Fusion
Science (NIFS) at Toki, Japan. One of the key issues of the LHD projec
t is the demonstration of currentless steady-state plasma operation. T
o achieve steady-state operation, real-time plasma control (RTPC) is d
esigned. The feedback control system for plasma current is made for th
e test of the time response and the algorithm. The fuzzy algorithm has
been compared with the standard PID algorithm. The fuzzy control show
s better performance for the nonlinear control response than the stand
ard PID control. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
