Study of the electrooptical properties of a disubstituted p-aromatic p
olyester showed that an effective ''electrooptical'' dipole of a polym
er chain is formed in polar solvents due to the orientational correlat
ion between the polar groups of a macromolecule and the dipoles of sol
vent molecules. This leads to a change in the effective dipole of a po
lymer chain and transforms the small-scale mechanism of reorientation
of macromolecule in an electric field into a large-scale one. It is fo
und that a rise in the longitudinal constituent of macromolecular dipo
le due to the polar properties of a medium shows a threshold pattern.
This effect is observed when the solvent permittivity is above five.
