The chemical structure of the optical fluorescence centers produced by
thermal treatment of poly(p-xylylene) under various conditions was st
udied. It was found that, at the initial stage, the thermal degradatio
n of this polymer leads to an increase in the amount of stilbene units
and brings about the appearance of distyrylbenzene units and poly(phe
nylenevinylene) conjugated fragments. When the polymer films are heate
d in air, these moieties are formed and degraded at a higher rate as c
ompared to vacuum.
