Investigations using the traditional optical absorption measurements a
nd orthodox lock-in techniques in the PL measurements in conjunction w
ith effective mass band structure calculation including non-parabolici
ty in both the well and the barrier have been carried out. The investi
gations revealed that factors such as the band model, type of theoreti
cal model, use of wide well-samples, uncertainties in parameters like
effective mass, energy gap and hence the nonparabolicity constants, in
addition to the uncertainties in the well-width, have immensely contr
ibuted to the controversy witnessed on the band discontinuities in the
early and mid-eighties on the GaAs/AlGaAs MQW and SL systems.
