Abstract
Recent literature estimates that there are approximately 21/2 million nurses; of these a significant number may exhibit signs oi codependenc y, a behavior:or pattern that impedes an individual's ability to relat e to others on mature level. Codependency develops in dysfunctional fa mily systems and manifests itself in compulsive behaviors that make li fe painful and work emotionally difficult. Often, constructive communi cation is difficult as codependent persons tend to feel low sell-estee m and low sell-worth. Nursing students may exhibit characteristic code pendency traits among fellow students in the classroom, in the clinica l setting, and in interactions with faculty. Nurse educators, through their own sell-awareness, introspection and knowledge of the behaviors and characteristics oi codependency, can facilitate more effective co mmunication with all nursing students to promote healthier interaction s and relationships. Techniques to modify one's method oi interacting with others have clear potential for improving professional as well as personal relationships.
