Terminology for congenital hand problems is confusing and has changed
over the last several years. This article clarifies some of these prob
lematic terms. Some congenital differences are inherited and should be
recognized in order to advise the patient's family. Timing and planni
ng surgery depends on several factors, such as presence of other assoc
iated anomalies, development of normal milestones of hand-eye coordina
tion, and growth of the infant hand.
