An electrostatic ion guide has been developed to transmit externally f
ormed ions in chemical ionization mass spectrometry. Transport of ions
over a distance of ten or more cm is accomplished with a high efficie
ncy. Our design of the ion guide allows efficient separation of ion fr
om neutral molecules, which provides a relatively simple means to sign
ificantly increase the detection sensitivity in chemical ionization ma
