Co-precipitation from equimolar nitrate solutions of uranium (VI) and
gadolinium has been used to obtain a mixture of (NH4)(4)UO2(CO3)(3) an
d Gd-2(CO3)(3) . 3H(2)O at a pre-determined composition. Simultaneous
measurements by TG, DTA and evolved gas analysis (EGA) showed that a c
alcination temperature of 700 degrees C was necessary to decompose the
carbonate completely to oxides. X-ray diffraction data indicated that
a solid solution of Gd2O3 in U3O8 cannot be obtained by heating the c
arbonate mixtures up to 800 degrees C in inert atmospheres. (C) 1998 E
