M. Aihara et al., EYE SOCKET RECONSTRUCTION WITH FREE FLAPS IN PATIENTS WHO HAVE HAD POSTOPERATIVE RADIOTHERAPY, Journal of cranio-maxillo-facial surgery, 26(5), 1998, pp. 301-305
It is difficult to fit an ocular prosthesis and correct periorbital de
pression deformity in a patient who has undergone radiotherapy after e
nucleation of the eye for retinoblastoma during infancy. Simultaneousl
y, developmental disturbances of the eyelids and severe periorbital de
pression deformities develop. However, due to recent advances in micro
vascular surgery, free flap transplantation is increasingly used for e
ye socket reconstruction because of its good circulatory effects with
enough volume to augment large periorbital tissue defects. In the pres
ent study, we report on our success in using a free groin flap, scapul
ar flaps and parascapular flaps simultaneously for reconstruction of e
ye sockets and correction of depressed deformities.
