The problem of the Pb/Zn primry smelter slag disposal could be positiv
ely solved through their reus in the civil engineering and in the buil
ding industry. The study on the evluation of the environmentl impact c
aused by their reuse is basically connected with characterization of t
he slags nd investigtion on the mechanisms of release of pollutants. I
n this study attention has been focalized on the leaching mechanisms i
n different scenarios and on a comparison of the paramenters which gov
ern their release on a short and long term basis. The long term releas
e to deionized water tin order to simulate rain water) in the presence
of sand has ben compared with data derived from the release tests ind
icated by the Italian regulations.
