Abstract
Sphingolipid ceramide has emerged as a lipid messenger of cell functio ns including differentiation and apoptosis. Diverse kinds of stresses (ultraviolet, irradiation, heat shock and hypoxia) and biological fact ors (TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma and Fas antibody) require ceramide generatio n to execute apoptosis. The review summarises the diversity and comple xity of up- and downstream of ceramide signalling in apoptosis and cli nical implications of ceramide induced apoptosis.
