Neutron scattering measurements have been made on SmMn2Ge2 characteris
ed by AC susceptibility. The structure of all three magnetic states ha
ve been identified and a buckled magnetic structure is observed in the
low temperature ferromagnetic and in the anti-ferromagnetic states. C
hanges in this structure reflect anisotropic changes in the lattice co
nstants and provide an explanation of the giant magnetoresistance.
