Abstract
Effective energy loss functions for 1 keV electrons incident on therma lly cleaned and oxygen-adsorbed Si (111) have been derived from reflec tion electron energy loss spectroscopy data using an extended Landau t heory. Ill the effective energy loss functions for the clean Si(lll) s urface, fine loss structures can be seen distinctly. Comparison of the effective energy loss functions for the oxygen-adsorbed surface with those for the clean surface reveals that contributions from surface ex citation are quite sensitive to oxygen adsorption.
