Abstract
This paper considers how the economics paradigm should be changed to e mbrace modern concepts of systems science. It criticises the reduction ist approaches of economic rationalism and free market economics and s uggests a more holistic approach should be adopted, based on Prigogine 's concepts of dissipative structures, held in a state of tension far from equilibrium; and Simon's concepts of sub optimisation.
