Abstract
Future fusion reactors will generate waste during operation and decomm issioning. In contrast to fission waste, fusion waste will neither con tain transuranium elements nor fission products. However, the waste wi ll contain activation products and tritium. The management of the fusi on waste will be an important issue when deciding on the realisation a nd siting of the facilities. This paper focuses mainly on waste from f uture fusion power reactor designs investigated within the European pr ogramme on the safety and environmental assessment of fusion power, lo ng-term (SEAL). Comparisons are made with other energy producing syste ms on radioactive material produced, radiotoxicity, waste treatment, r e-cycling, clearance, intermediate storage and waste disposal.
