J. Ohta et I. Matsuba, ANALYSIS OF EARTHQUAKES BASED ON A DISSIPATIVE CELLULAR-AUTOMATA MODEL, Electronics and communications in Japan. Part 3, Fundamental electronic science, 82(2), 1999, pp. 20-27
Earthquakes are complex, destructive phenomena and to model them is ex
tremely difficult. Many mathematical models have been reported that ta
ke into account empirical rules known in connection with the frequency
statistics of recent earthquakes. The cellular automaton is a model f
or critical phenomena that provide particles to a cell and it can be a
pplied to the earthquake process. However, the cell configuration of t
he previously proposed model is extremely simple. In this paper, we pr
opose a model in which the cells are arranged with the simulated fault
diagram randomly distributed. Considering the dissipation of the stra
in energy of earthquake waves, the distributions of the particles in a
nalogy to the earthquake are partially reduced. The results of applyin
g this model to actual fault diagrams are reported. (C) 1998 Scripta T
