A closed-form theory is presented to characterize the noise accumulati
on in a transmission system with grating dispersion compensation, and
its implications for the system performance are discussed. It is shown
that the spectral distribution of the noise depends on the mapping us
ed to compensate for the dispersion. Optimum system performance is obt
ained for compensation maps that are symmetric with respect to the mid
